A few weeks back, I was asked what I thought of Matt Nichols. One might say Nichols has proved me WRONG over the proceedings weeks. I disagree. CFL fans have watched a procession of pretenders over the last few years…quarterbacks come and go…MOSTLY GO.
So I started thinking about the quarterback position. WHAT makes a good quarterback…and what makes a GREAT quarterback? There can be ONLY one answer: GREAT quarterbacks are ASSHOLES…end of story.
Let me explain. In order to be a GOOD quarterback, you need self confidence. When things go wrong…and in a game as chaotic and unpredictable a the CFL they WILL…you need to shrug off that adversity and come out slinging. But even a GOOD quarterback will face so much negativity that his confidence will waver. Then it’s all over but the sharks. Tough game.
But when I think of athletes like Doug Flutie, Warren Moon and a VERY few others, it’s their self-veneration…that belief that NOTHING is beyond their abilities and until the final whistle ACTUALLY blows they have every chance of pulling a miracle out of some orifice…that sets them apart from all the rest. Great athletes have a self-belief that borders on the psychotic. ASSHOLES.
If I had a nickle…for every quarterback who “broke” on the brutal anvil of this game…I’d buy me a Baconator. If there was a &*^%#@ Wendy’s in this city. I mean…it’s just CRUEL to keep bombarding us with ads then…
So Nichols and the Bombers have had a good run. But we’ve ALL seen him when the confidence starts to wane. Despite what Winnipeg fans thought at the time, Nichols is no asshole. There’s every chance a defence like ours could be the very force that knocks Nichols off his perch, and plummeting back down to snorffle at the roots of mediocrity (where he belongs IMO).
NOT TO MENTION THE BIZARRO FACT THAT IF THE ALOUETTES WIN THEY’RE VIRTUALLY TIED FOR SECOND, ONE POINT OUT OF 1ST IN THE EAST.
Who woulda thunk THAT?
